Foundation Types

Ground-mount solar racking is typically supported on driven steel piles, helical piles, or concrete pier foundations, with the foundation type selected based on the racking manufacturer's design and the site's soil conditions. We install foundations per the project's structural engineering and geotechnical requirements, working from the racking system supplier's layout and pile schedule.

Site Coordination

Solar field foundation work is coordinated with the civil site plan, grading schedule, and racking and module installation crews that follow our scope. We verify pile plumbness, embedment depth, and spacing against the approved layout before racking installation begins.

Soil Conditions and Foundation Selection

Ground-mount solar sites cover a wide range of soil types across our Mid-Atlantic service territory — sandy coastal soils, dense clay, and rockier upland conditions all behave differently under pile-driving equipment, which is one of the reasons a geotechnical investigation typically precedes final foundation design. Where driven piles encounter refusal or unexpected soil conditions, we work with the project's engineer to resolve the issue in the field — whether that means adjusting pile depth, switching to a different pile location, or flagging the condition for a design change — rather than forcing an installation that doesn't match the actual ground conditions.

Sequencing Across a Large Solar Field

A utility-scale or community solar field can involve installing thousands of individual foundation points across a large site, which makes installation sequencing and quality consistency important considerations. We track completed pile locations against the approved layout as work progresses, so that any deviations are caught early rather than after racking installation has already begun on top of an out-of-tolerance foundation.
