Road Safety Systems — A RoadGuard Company

Safety Barriers

Roadside and site safety barrier systems selected and installed to match the containment level and site conditions of each project.

Not every roadside hazard calls for the same barrier system. Road Safety Systems works with highway agencies and general contractors across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland to specify and install the safety barrier system that fits the project — whether that means steel rail, cable, or concrete — based on containment level, available deflection space, and site conditions.

Matching the Barrier to the Site

Selecting the right safety barrier requires weighing several factors together: the test level required for the traffic speed and vehicle mix, the available deflection space behind the barrier, maintenance considerations over the barrier's service life, and total installed cost. We work with project engineers early in design to help evaluate these tradeoffs and confirm the barrier system meets the applicable agency's approved products list.

Installation Standards

Every safety barrier system we install is installed per the manufacturer's specifications and the applicable state DOT or turnpike authority standard drawings. We document installation with photos and as-built records for agency acceptance, consistent with our documentation approach across guiderail, bridge rail, and barrier work.

A Consultative Approach to Barrier Selection

Many of the safety barrier projects we're brought into start with a project engineer or general contractor who already has a general sense of what's needed but wants a second opinion on the specific system, or wants installation pricing across a few different options before finalizing design. We're comfortable working in either mode — installing to a fully specified design, or participating earlier in the process to help think through the barrier selection itself, drawing on our direct installation experience with steel rail, cable, and concrete systems across the Mid-Atlantic.

Mixed-System Corridors

Some corridors call for more than one barrier type along their length — cable barrier through a wide median section that narrows near an interchange, transitioning to concrete barrier where deflection space runs out, for example. We have experience installing and transitioning between different barrier systems within a single project, which requires careful attention to the transition details between systems in addition to the barrier runs themselves.

Ongoing Barrier Maintenance

Barrier systems take damage over their service life from vehicle impacts, severe weather, and routine wear. We can support agencies and property owners with barrier repair and replacement work outside of new installation projects, assessing damage and restoring barrier sections to specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

We weigh the required test level, available deflection space, maintenance considerations, and installed cost together with the project engineer, and confirm the recommended system appears on the applicable agency approved products list.

Yes. It's common for a corridor to transition between barrier types — cable barrier through a wide median narrowing to concrete barrier near an interchange, for example. We install and detail the transitions between systems as part of these mixed-system projects.

Yes. We can assess damage from vehicle impacts or weather events and restore barrier sections — steel rail, cable, or concrete — to specification outside of new installation projects.
