Bollards
Fixed and removable bollards for perimeter protection, pedestrian separation, and vehicle access control at DOT, municipal, and commercial sites.
Bollards provide a straightforward, visible way to keep vehicles out of pedestrian areas, protect building facades and utility infrastructure, and control access points without the footprint of a full barrier run. Road Safety Systems installs fixed, removable, and crash-rated bollard systems across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
Bollard Types We Install
**Fixed Bollards**: Permanently embedded steel bollards for perimeter delineation, pedestrian area protection, and general vehicle exclusion at commercial, municipal, and DOT-adjacent facilities.
**Removable and Retractable Bollards**: Bollards that can be removed or lowered to allow occasional vehicle access — such as service vehicles or emergency access — while maintaining pedestrian protection during normal operating hours.
**Crash-Rated Bollards**: Bollards engineered and tested to arrest a vehicle impact at a specified speed and weight, used where a higher level of protection is required, such as building entrances and critical infrastructure access points.
Installation
Bollard installation includes foundation work sized to the bollard type and required impact rating, correct embedment depth, and finish coordination (steel, powder-coated, or sleeve-covered) to match the site. We coordinate bollard spacing and placement with sightlines, ADA pedestrian clearance requirements, and vehicle access needs.
Planning a Bollard Layout
Bollard spacing is not arbitrary — spacing that's too wide defeats the purpose of vehicle exclusion, while spacing that's too tight can create an obstacle for pedestrians, wheelchair users, or maintenance equipment that legitimately needs to pass through. We work from the site plan and any agency or property-specific spacing standards to lay out bollard runs that balance security intent with pedestrian accessibility, and we coordinate placement around existing utilities, drainage, and underground infrastructure before foundation work begins.
Matching Bollards to the Threat Level
Not every application needs a crash-rated bollard. A low-traffic pedestrian plaza may only need fixed steel bollards to discourage casual vehicle intrusion, while a building entrance in a higher-risk setting may call for bollards engineered and tested to a specific vehicle weight and speed. We help property owners and site managers think through the actual protection needed for a given location rather than defaulting to the most expensive option in every case.
