Sign Panels

The sign panel is the part of a highway sign that drivers actually read — the reflective aluminum face carrying regulatory, warning, or guide information. Road Safety Systems supplies and installs sign panels to DOT and turnpike authority specification across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, including New Jersey Turnpike signage projects.

Sign Panel Types

**Regulatory Signs**: Speed limits, stop and yield signs, and other signs conveying legal requirements, fabricated to standard sizes and legend specifications set by the applicable agency.

**Warning Signs**: Signs alerting drivers to roadway conditions, curves, intersections, and hazards, using standard shapes, colors, and legends per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

**Guide Signs**: Route markers, destination signs, and interchange guide signs, including larger fabricated panels for overhead and cantilever structures.

Materials and Reflectivity

Sign panels are fabricated from aluminum sheeting with reflective sheeting applied per the required engineering grade for the roadway classification and speed. We coordinate panel fabrication with agency specifications for sheeting type, legend layout, and mounting hardware, and install panels on new posts, replacement posts, or existing structures as the project requires.

Sign Retroreflectivity and Replacement Programs

Sign sheeting reflectivity degrades over time with sun exposure and weathering, which is why agencies run systematic sign replacement programs rather than waiting for individual signs to fail visibly at night. We support these replacement programs at scale — removing aged panels, fabricating and installing replacements to current sheeting and legend standards, and documenting completed locations for the agency's asset management records.

Legend Accuracy and Fabrication Quality Control

A sign panel is only useful if its legend is accurate — correct route numbers, distances, and destination names matter as much as the physical sign itself. We verify legend content against the agency's approved sign schedule before fabrication and check completed panels against that schedule again before installation, catching discrepancies before they become a sign hanging on the roadside with the wrong information.
